Overview

Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for carbohydrate metabolism and neural function. It acts as a coenzyme in the decarboxylation of alpha-keto acids and in the pentose phosphate pathway, playing a critical role in energy production within cells. Thiamine deficiency can lead to beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It is used therapeutically to treat or prevent thiamine deficiency, especially in populations at risk such as those with alcoholism, malabsorption syndromes, or certain chronic illnesses. Thiamine cannot be synthesized by humans and must be obtained from dietary sources or supplements[1][2][3][4].
