**Thioacetamide** is a small molecule organosulfur compound with the formula C₂H₅NS, best known as a potent hepatotoxin. In biomedical research, thioacetamide is commonly used to induce acute and chronic liver injury—such as fibrosis and cirrhosis—in animal models, mimicking features of human liver disease[2][3][5][7]. Its toxicity arises from metabolic activation by cytochrome P450 enzymes to reactive intermediates (*S*-oxide and *S,S*-dioxide) that covalently bind to cellular proteins and lipids, causing oxidative stress, hepatocellular necrosis, apoptosis, and organ damage[1][4][5][7]. Thioacetamide is classified as a possible human carcinogen (IARC Group 2B)[2][6][8]. It is not an approved therapeutic agent and is used primarily as a laboratory reagent and tool compound.
