Thiocamphor is a bicyclic monoterpenoid compound with the molecular formula C10H16S. It is structurally related to camphor but contains a sulfur atom in place of an oxygen atom at the ketone position. Thiocamphor is primarily used as a chemical intermediate and building block in organic synthesis for pharmaceuticals and fragrances. In pharmaceutical research, it has been explored as a precursor for developing analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. Additionally, it finds applications as a flavoring agent in food products and as an ingredient in cosmetic formulations due to its pleasant aroma. Its mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated; however, by analogy to camphor—which activates TRPV1 and TRPV3 channels leading to desensitization of sensory nerves—thiocamphor may share similar properties though direct evidence is lacking.
