Overview

Thiopental sodium-Omegapharm is an ultra-short-acting barbiturate anesthetic developed and marketed by Omegapharm. It functions as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, enhancing the inhibitory neurotransmission of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system. This action leads to a rapid onset of hypnosis and sedation, typically within 30 to 40 seconds of intravenous administration. It is primarily indicated for the induction of general anesthesia, as a supplement to other anesthetic agents, and for the emergency control of convulsive states. Additionally, it is utilized in neurosurgery to reduce increased intracranial pressure. As a TGA-registered product in Australia, it is supplied as a sterile powder for reconstitution and intravenous injection.
