Thiram is an organosulfur compound classified as a thiuram disulfide and the oxidized dimer of dimethyldithiocarbamate. It is primarily used as a fungicide for seed and crop protection in agriculture, acting to prevent fungal diseases such as stem gall of coriander, damping off, smut of millet, and neck rot of onion. Thiram also serves as an ectoparasiticide and animal repellent to protect fruit trees and ornamentals from damage by rabbits, rodents, and deer. In addition to its agricultural uses, thiram has been employed in dermatology as a scabicide for treating human scabies and has been incorporated into sunscreens or soaps for its bactericidal properties. Mechanistically, thiram acts by interfering with enzymatic processes in fungi through inhibition of sulfhydryl-containing enzymes essential for fungal metabolism[1][2][4]. It is also used industrially as a vulcanizing agent in rubber production.
