Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells being investigated for their immunomodulatory properties in solid organ transplantation. In this specific clinical program led by Monia Lorini, third-party (allogeneic) MSCs are ex-vivo expanded and administered to recipients of kidney transplants from deceased donors. The primary therapeutic goal is to induce immunological tolerance, thereby reducing the risk of graft rejection and the necessity for long-term, high-dose immunosuppressive drugs. MSCs exert their effects through the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and direct interaction with host immune cells, including T cells and dendritic cells, to create a pro-tolerogenic environment. The study is conducted in two phases, with Phase A focusing on safety and mechanistic outcomes.
