Overview

Thonzonium is a monocationic surface-active agent (cationic surfactant) primarily used as an additive in otic (ear) and nasal pharmaceutical formulations. Its main function is to disperse exudate and cellular debris, thereby enhancing the penetration and tissue contact of co-administered active ingredients such as antibiotics or corticosteroids[2][6][7]. Thonzonium bromide is a component of FDA-approved products like Cortisporin TC and Coly-Mycin S Otic, which are indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal and infections following ear surgery[3][4][5]. Mechanistically, thonzonium acts by uncoupling vacuolar ATPase in pathogenic fungi, inhibiting RANKL-induced osteoclast formation (anti-resorptive effect), and has been shown to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 3CL protease with potential broad-spectrum antiviral activity[2][5][8].
