Thoracic Epidural Analgesia (TEA) is a regional anesthetic technique involving the administration of medications into the epidural space at the thoracic level to provide targeted perioperative pain relief. In the clinical trial protocol developed by Örebro University for patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy, the TEA intervention consists of an intra-operative administration of bupivacaine combined with adrenaline (epinephrine), followed by a post-operative infusion of ropivacaine and sufentanil. The technique is being investigated for its potential to modulate the immunological and inflammatory stress responses associated with major surgery. Research suggests that by attenuating the surgical stress response, TEA may potentially reduce cancer-related mortality and improve long-term outcomes in patients with prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers.
