Overview

ThRabis is a recombinant viral vector vaccine candidate designed for the prevention and potentially the treatment of rabies. It utilizes a live-attenuated measles virus (MV) vector platform (Schwarz strain) to deliver rabies virus antigens, specifically the rabies virus glycoprotein (G protein). Developed by Themis Bioscience (now a subsidiary of Merck & Co.), the vaccine aims to provide a more efficient and potentially single-dose alternative to current post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimens, which typically require multiple injections of inactivated vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. The measles vector is engineered to induce both strong humoral (neutralizing antibodies) and cellular immune responses. The project was supported by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
