This refers to a triple-drug antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimen evaluated by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in rural Zambia. The primary regimen evaluated in the study (NCT00495326) consists of zidovudine (ZDV), lamivudine (3TC), and nevirapine (NVP). Alternative combinations include lopinavir/ritonavir as a substitute for nevirapine, and stavudine (d4T) as a substitute for zidovudine in patients with moderate to severe anemia. These drugs work by inhibiting HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (NRTIs and NNRTIs) or HIV-1 protease, thereby suppressing maternal viral load and reducing the risk of vertical transmission during pregnancy and delivery.
