Overview
Three Grass Ointment (also known as San Cao Oil or San Cao Ointment) is a traditional Chinese medicine topical formulation developed by the Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Originating from the Haipai Xia's Surgery empirical formula, it is prepared by decocting three key herbal ingredients—Radix Lithospermi (紫草), Radix Rubiae (茜草), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (生甘草)—in a vegetable oil base (such as soybean oil or olive oil). The ointment possesses anti-inflammatory, heat-clearing, detoxifying, and blood-cooling properties. It is primarily developed and clinically evaluated for the treatment, prevention of recurrence, and daily care of skin lesions in patients with psoriasis vulgaris, as well as other inflammatory skin conditions like cheilitis.
