Thrombin alfa is a recombinant form of human coagulation protein (thrombin) produced using genetically modified Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. It is structurally and functionally identical to endogenous human thrombin. Thrombin alfa acts as a serine protease that promotes hemostasis when applied topically by converting fibrinogen to fibrin at the site of vessel injury, leading directly to clot formation. It also activates platelets and clotting factors V, VIII, and XIII, resulting in cross-linking and stabilization of the fibrin clot. The drug is used as an aid in achieving hemostasis for minor bleeding from capillaries and small venules during surgical procedures or trauma. Thrombin alfa bypasses initial steps in the coagulation cascade by acting locally at the site of application[1][2][5]. The product undergoes rigorous purification processes including nanofiltration and solvent/detergent treatment to minimize risk of viral transmission[1][2].
