Thrombin-VSI

Thrombin-VSI is a topical hemostatic agent containing bovine-derived thrombin (Factor IIa). It is a serine protease that facilitates the final step of the coagulation cascade by directly converting fibrinogen into fibrin, leading to the formation of a stable blood clot. This mechanism is independent of the patient's endogenous clotting factors, making it effective even in cases of impaired coagulation, provided fibrinogen is present. Developed by Vascular Solutions (now part of Teleflex), Thrombin-VSI is indicated for use in surgical procedures to control capillary and minor venular bleeding when standard techniques like ligation are ineffective. It is often supplied as a lyophilized powder to be reconstituted and applied topically, sometimes in conjunction with absorbable gelatin sponges or as part of specialized hemostatic kits like the D-Stat system. Like other bovine-derived thrombin products, its use has been associated with the development of inhibitory antibodies against bovine thrombin and Factor V, which can cross-react with human coagulation factors.
