Overview

ThromboSol is a proprietary platelet-stabilizing solution developed by LifeCell Corporation to facilitate the refrigeration (4°C) and cryopreservation (-80°C to -196°C) of platelet concentrates. It consists of a synergistic mixture of six second-messenger effectors (platelet inhibitors) designed to prevent the 'platelet storage lesion'—a suite of morphological and functional changes that typically occur when platelets are stored outside of room temperature. Key components identified in the formulation include amiloride, sodium nitroprusside, adenosine, dipyridamole, theophylline, and quinidine. By maintaining high intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and inhibiting thromboxane B2 production, ThromboSol suppresses premature platelet activation, maintains discoid morphology, and preserves functional integrity. This allows for long-term storage of autologous or allogeneic platelets, particularly to support cancer patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy that causes severe thrombocytopenia.
