Thujopsene is a natural sesquiterpene isolated from the essential oil of the Hiba tree (*Thujopsis dolabrata*). It is being investigated for its anti-tumor properties, particularly against glioblastoma, gastric cancer, and breast cancer. Research conducted at Toho University indicates that thujopsene inhibits tumor cell proliferation more potently than hinokitiol, another component of Hiba oil. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis through the activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9. DARTS analysis has identified Pyruvate Kinase M2 (PKM2) as a specific intracellular binding protein, suggesting that thujopsene's anti-tumor effects are mediated through the modulation of this metabolic enzyme. Due to its low molecular weight and high volatility, it is being explored for potential application in inhalation-based "aroma therapy" for brain tumors.
