Overview
HERI is a brand name for thymalfasin (thymosin alpha-1), a synthetic 28-amino acid peptide immunomodulator developed and marketed by SciGen. It is approved in South Korea for use in oncology as an adjuvant therapy to enhance the immune response. Chemically identical to the naturally occurring human thymic peptide, HERI promotes the maturation of T-lymphocytes, increases natural killer (NK) cell activity, and stimulates the production of Th1 cytokines such as interferon-gamma and interleukin-2. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of Toll-like receptors (TLR9 and TLR2) on dendritic cells, which helps restore immune function in patients with cancer or chronic viral infections like hepatitis B and C.
