Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Thyme (*Thymus vulgaris*) is an herb from the mint family widely used as a culinary spice and traditional remedy. Its primary active constituents include thymol and carvacrol, which are responsible for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties[3][6][7]. Thyme extracts and essential oils have demonstrated activity against bacteria (including antibiotic-resistant strains), fungi (such as Candida species), and viruses in laboratory studies[2][3][8]. The herb has been traditionally used to treat respiratory conditions like coughs and bronchitis due to its expectorant effects[1][6], as well as for digestive issues. Some compounds in thyme inhibit acetylcholinesterase, suggesting potential benefit in Alzheimer's disease by increasing acetylcholine levels; however, clinical evidence is lacking[2]. Thyme is also rich in vitamins (A, C) and minerals (potassium, magnesium)[3][7]. It is primarily consumed orally or topically as an herbal supplement or essential oil.
