Overview

Thyme honey is a natural product produced by bees that collect nectar primarily from thyme (Thymus spp.) flowers. It is not a pharmaceutical drug but is widely used as a traditional remedy and dietary supplement. Thyme honey contains various bioactive compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and organic acids such as ascorbic acid, citric acid, and malic acid. These constituents contribute to its notable antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties[5][6]. Mechanistically, the high antioxidant content helps scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress[1]. The antibacterial activity is largely attributed to hydrogen peroxide production (via glucose oxidase) when the honey is diluted; this creates an acidic environment hostile to pathogens[6]. Thyme honey has been studied for its potential benefits in managing radiation-induced xerostomia in head and neck cancer patients—improving symptoms like dry mouth and pain—and for supporting liver health by reducing hepatocellular damage in animal models[1][3][6]. It also promotes wound healing through osmotic effects that draw out fluids from wounds while providing an antimicrobial barrier[5].
