Thyme oil hydrosol is an aqueous distillate produced during the steam distillation of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil, particularly from chemotypes rich in thymol. It contains water-soluble components and trace amounts of volatile compounds found in the essential oil, such as thymol and carvacrol. Thyme oil hydrosol is used for its antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. It is applied topically for skin conditions like acne or wounds; used as a mouthwash or gargle for oral health issues such as canker sores or sore throats; inhaled or ingested (diluted) to support respiratory health; and sometimes added to foods for flavoring. The mechanism of action primarily involves disruption of microbial cell membranes by phenolic compounds like thymol and carvacrol[1][5][6]. There are no large-scale clinical trials confirming its efficacy in humans; most evidence comes from traditional use and laboratory studies.
