Overview

Thymic humoral factor (THF) is a peptide produced by the thymus gland that exerts potent immunomodulatory effects on various components of the immune system. It acts as a thymus hormone, participating in the development and maturation of lymphoid cells and cellular immune responses. Mechanistically, THF induces immunocompetence in T-cells by activating membranal adenyl cyclase, leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels specifically in thymus-derived cells. This action enhances T-cell function and modulates cytokine production—such as increasing IL-10 and reducing IL-6—to reduce inflammation. Preclinical studies have shown that THF can decrease liver damage and fibrosis in animal models by modulating immune responses. Clinically, it has been explored for use alongside interferon or mitogens in hepatitis B and D patients, with additional antiviral activity observed against cytomegalovirus in animal models[2][3][5].
