Overview

Thymol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid phenolic compound found in thyme oil and other essential oils. It appears as colorless crystals with a pleasant aromatic odor and is known for its strong antiseptic properties. Thymol acts primarily as an antibacterial and antifungal agent by disrupting microbial cell membranes and inhibiting enzyme activity. It has been used in over-the-counter products such as mouthwashes (e.g., Listerine), toothpastes, topical antiseptics, dusting powders for fungal infections like tinea (ringworm), and as a stabilizer in pharmaceutical preparations. Thymol also exhibits antioxidant activity through inhibition of aldose reductase enzyme and reduction of oxidative stress. Historically it was used as a vermifuge to expel parasitic worms[1][4][6][7].
