Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Thymomodulin is a biologically active bovine thymus extract that has been utilized in clinical practice for over 50 years as an immunomodulator. It consists of a complex mixture of peptides, including thymosins such as thymosin beta-4, and proteins generally under 17 kDa. The drug works by enhancing the maturation and function of T-lymphocytes and inducing the release of cytokines, specifically TNF-alpha and IL-1beta, from macrophages. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of immune dysregulation, recurrent respiratory infections, and as a supportive therapy in viral infections like herpes simplex. Thymomodulin is available both as a pharmaceutical drug in various international markets and as a dietary supplement.
