Overview

Thymopentin is a synthetic pentapeptide that mimics the active site of the naturally occurring thymic hormone thymopoietin. It acts as an immunomodulator by promoting the differentiation and maturation of thymic T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, enhancing T helper cell function, and regulating T cell subset proportions. Its mechanism involves increasing intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels and modulating immune responses. Clinically, it has been used in autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis), immunodeficiency disorders (including HIV infection), adjunctive cancer therapy (e.g., chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Sezary's syndrome), atopic dermatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and to restore immune competence in elderly surgical patients or those with immunosuppression due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Due to poor membrane permeability and rapid metabolism resulting in a short half-life (~30 seconds), repeated injections or intravenous infusions are required for therapeutic effect[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
