Thymosin alpha 1 is a synthetic acetylated peptide originally isolated from the thymus and is considered the main active component of thymic extracts. It acts as an immunomodulatory agent by promoting the maturation and differentiation of T lymphocytes and enhancing immune responses. Thymosin alpha 1 stimulates peripheral blood lymphocytes to mature into functional T cells and increases cytokine production (such as interferon-α, interferon-γ, interleukin-2). It also activates natural killer (NK) cells and monocyte/macrophage function. Clinically it is used for treating chronic hepatitis B and C infections, various cancers (including hepatocellular carcinoma), immune deficiencies (congenital or acquired), autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus, sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome in neonates/adults, and as an adjuvant to vaccines in immunocompromised patients[1][3][4][7]. Its mechanism involves modulation of both innate and adaptive immunity.
