Thymosin beta-4 is a naturally occurring peptide composed of 43 amino acids and is found in many tissues throughout the body. It was initially identified as a thymic hormone but is now recognized primarily for its role as an actin-sequestering protein. Thymosin beta-4 regulates the availability of G-actin monomers in cells and plays a critical role in cell migration, tissue repair, regeneration, angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), anti-inflammatory responses, and reduction of fibrosis. Its mechanism involves binding to actin to promote cell movement and mobilization/differentiation of stem/progenitor cells for tissue regeneration. Thymosin beta-4 has been investigated for use in healing sports injuries; soft tissue repair; treatment of pressure ulcers; immune support; cardioprotection after myocardial infarction; neuroprotection (including multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury); ocular disorders such as dry eye syndrome and corneal wound healing; diabetic retinopathy; sepsis; chemical burns; non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); lung inflammation/fibrosis; hair growth stimulation among others[1][2][3][5][6].
