Overview

Thymus vulgaris (common thyme) is a botanical extract evaluated as an active ingredient in herbal mouthwash formulations for the management of biofilm-induced gingivitis. It contains bioactive compounds, such as thymol and carvacrol, which exhibit potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In clinical studies, Thymus vulgaris mouthwash has been shown to reduce plaque accumulation, gingival bleeding, and salivary levels of inflammatory mediators (such as interleukin-1 beta and matrix metalloproteinase-8), offering a natural alternative to chemical plaque control agents like chlorhexidine.
