Overview

This is a combination drug consisting of thyroid hormone T4 (levothyroxine) and potassium iodide. Thyroid hormone T4 is a synthetic form of thyroxine, the primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism, growth, and development. Potassium iodide provides stable (non-radioactive) iodine that can acutely block the release of endogenous thyroid hormones from the gland and rapidly decrease circulating levels in certain clinical situations. The combination may be used in specific scenarios such as managing severe hyperthyroidism or preparing patients for thyroid surgery when rapid normalization of thyroid function is required. The mechanism involves both direct hormonal replacement (T4) and inhibition of new hormone synthesis/release via high-dose iodine effect (potassium iodide). This combination is not standard therapy but may be considered in select cases under specialist supervision[1][5][6].
