Overview

ThyroTop is an oral radiopharmaceutical consisting of hard capsules containing sodium iodide labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-131 (I-131). Developed and manufactured by the Institute of Isotopes Co. Ltd. (Izotop) in Hungary, it is primarily used for the treatment of thyroid disorders including Graves' disease, hyperfunctioning adenoma, and non-immunogenic diffuse goiter. It is also indicated for the management of thyroid carcinoma, specifically for the ablation of remnant thyroid tissue following surgery and the treatment of metastatic or recurrent disease. The therapeutic efficacy of ThyroTop is derived from the high affinity of the thyroid gland for iodine; the sodium/iodide cotransporter (NIS) facilitates the uptake of I-131 into thyroid follicular cells, where the emission of beta particles induces localized cytotoxic effects through DNA damage, thereby reducing thyroid hyperactivity or destroying cancerous cells.
