THYTREG is an autologous cell therapy consisting of thymic regulatory T cells (Tregs) that are isolated from the patient's own thymus tissue, which is typically removed during pediatric cardiac surgery. These cells are expanded ex vivo using interleukin-2 (IL-2) and subsequently transfused back into the infant at the time of heart transplantation. The therapy is designed to prevent graft rejection and restore immunological homeostasis by suppressing the recipient's immune response against the donor organ, potentially reducing the requirement for long-term systemic immunosuppression in pediatric patients.
