The Tiantan vaccinia virus-based HIV vaccine is China's first replication-competent viral vector vaccine designed to combat HIV/AIDS. It utilizes the Tiantan strain of the vaccinia virus, historically used for smallpox eradication in China, as a vector to deliver HIV-1 genes (gag, pol, and env). This approach aims to induce robust and sustained humoral and cellular immune responses against HIV antigens by leveraging the vaccinia virus's replication ability for prolonged antigen exposure. Developed by a consortium of Chinese institutions, including the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention under the Chinese CDC and Peking Union Medical College Hospital, the vaccine has successfully completed Phase 1 clinical trials, demonstrating safety and immunogenicity in healthy human subjects.
