Overview

Tiao Geng Tang (also known as Tiao Gan Tang or Regulating the Liver Decoction) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula first described in 1827 AD. It consists of seven herbs with Dong Quai (Dang Gui) as a principal ingredient. The formula is designed to nourish and harmonize Liver and Kidney Yin, tonify Blood, regulate menstruation, and disperse Cold to stop pain due to Blood Stasis. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is primarily used for gynecological disorders associated with Deficient Liver and Kidney Yin—such as amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), menstrual cramps, fatigue, vertigo, tinnitus, insomnia, dry eyes—and for patterns like Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency or combined Liver Blood/Kidney Yin Deficiency[1][2]. Modern studies suggest that Tiao Geng Tang may have anti-aging effects by reducing apoptosis in hypothalamic neurons via suppression of ASK1/MKK7/JNK signaling pathways[3], upregulate estrogen receptor alpha and beta expression[4], lower FSH/LH levels while modestly increasing estradiol compared to hormone therapy[4], and alleviate menopausal symptoms with fewer side effects than conventional hormone replacement therapy[4]. The chemical profile includes compounds such as paeoniflorin (from peony root), 2,3,5,4’-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (from Polygonum multiflorum), and icariin (from Epimedium)[4].
