Tiaowei Chengqi Decoction (TWCQD) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originally documented in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Febrile Diseases). It is composed of three primary medicinal components: *Rheum palmatum* (Dahuang), *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gancao), and *Natrii Sulfas* (Mangxiao). In modern clinical research, particularly at the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, TWCQD is investigated for the treatment of sepsis-induced gastrointestinal dysfunction (septic gut dysfunction). The formula works through a multi-target approach, primarily by inhibiting the systemic inflammatory response and protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier. Its active constituents, such as emodin and rhein from Rhubarb, are known to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 via the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. Additionally, the inclusion of sodium sulfate provides an osmotic laxative effect that promotes the clearance of endotoxins and restores gastrointestinal motility.
