Overview
Tiaozhong Formula (TZF) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal decoction developed by the Eye Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME), a common complication of diabetic retinopathy characterized by fluid accumulation in the macula. The formula is based on the TCM principle of "regulating the middle" (Tiaozhong), which focuses on strengthening the spleen and resolving dampness to address the underlying pathology of fluid retention. Clinical research suggests that Tiaozhong Formula exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, thereby reducing macular thickness and improving visual acuity. It is typically administered as an oral decoction and has been studied both as a monotherapy and as an adjunctive treatment to standard intravitreal anti-VEGF injections.
