Overview

Tiaprofenic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the arylpropionic acid (profen) class. It is primarily used to reduce pain, swelling, and joint stiffness associated with arthritis—including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The drug works by inhibiting prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 and 2 (also known as cyclooxygenase-1 and -2), thereby blocking the production of prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain. Tiaprofenic acid is administered orally, has high bioavailability (~90%), is sparingly metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, and most of it is excreted unchanged in urine. Long-term use can be associated with severe cystitis at a much higher rate than other NSAIDs; thus it is contraindicated in patients with cystitis or urinary tract infections[1][2][4][5][6][7].
