Overview

Ticagrelor is an oral antiplatelet medication classified as a P2Y12 receptor antagonist. It works by reversibly and noncompetitively inhibiting the P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor on platelets, thereby preventing platelet activation and aggregation. Unlike thienopyridines such as clopidogrel and prasugrel, ticagrelor does not require metabolic activation and binds at a different site on the receptor. This mechanism reduces the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction (heart attack), ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), a history of myocardial infarction, or established coronary artery disease. Ticagrelor is also indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with acute ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA). The drug was developed by AstraZeneca[3][5][6][8].
