Overview

Ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid is a combination antibiotic consisting of two active components: - **Ticarcillin** is an extended-spectrum penicillin (a β-lactam antibiotic) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. - **Clavulanic acid** is a β-lactamase inhibitor that protects ticarcillin from degradation by bacterial β-lactamases. This extends the spectrum of activity to include many organisms resistant to penicillins alone. The combination is used for the treatment of various serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, septicemia, lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), intra-abdominal infections (such as peritonitis), gynecologic infections (such as endometritis), urinary tract infections (complicated or uncomplicated), and others. It has notable activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria—including Pseudomonas aeruginosa—and some anaerobes[1][4][5][6][9]. This drug was previously marketed under the brand name Timentin but was withdrawn from the US market in 2015[1][10]. It remains referenced in clinical guidelines for certain indications.
