Tick-borne encephalitis inactivated vaccine is a biologic vaccine used to prevent tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an acute viral infection of the central nervous system caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the Flavivirus genus. The vaccine is produced by cultivating TBEV (commonly using strains such as "森张株" in China or Neudoerfl strain in Europe) on primary hamster kidney cells or Vero cells, followed by virus harvest, chemical inactivation (e.g., with formaldehyde), purification, and formulation with stabilizers and adjuvants such as aluminum hydroxide. The resulting product is a milky suspension containing inactivated whole TBE virus particles. Upon intramuscular injection, it stimulates the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against TBEV, providing protection against infection. It is recommended for individuals living in or traveling to endemic areas and laboratory workers at risk of exposure[1][2][3][7]. Major global brands include Ticovac (Pfizer) and FSME-Immun.
