Overview

Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine (formaldehyde-inactivated) is a biologic vaccine indicated for active immunization to prevent tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a viral infection caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus. The vaccine consists of whole TBE virus propagated in chick embryo fibroblast cells and inactivated with formaldehyde. The antigen is then purified and adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. This process preserves the structural integrity of key viral envelope proteins necessary for inducing protective immunity while rendering the virus noninfectious[1][2][4][5]. The primary mechanism of action is induction of neutralizing antibodies against the envelope proteins of TBEV. It was originally developed by Baxter International and later acquired by Pfizer; other manufacturers include Bavarian Nordic (Encepur), IPVE and Microgen in Russia, and CIBP in China[2][6]. The main indication is prevention of tick-borne encephalitis in individuals aged 1 year or older[3][7].
