Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tie kuai zi (铁筷子) is the traditional Chinese name for the root and rhizome of *Helleborus thibetanus* Franchet, a perennial herb in the family Ranunculaceae that is endemic to China. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to clear heat, resolve toxins, promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, and reduce swelling and pain. Its traditional indications include cystitis, urethritis, boils, toxic sores, traumatic injuries, and overexertion. Phytochemical investigations of the plant have identified active constituents such as bufadienolide glycosides, steroidal saponins, and cardiac glycosides (including HTF-1) which exhibit cytotoxic and anti-proliferative activities against various cancer cell lines in vitro. The root is considered slightly toxic and is not approved as a regulated pharmaceutical drug.
