Overview

Tiger Balm is a topical analgesic product used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with backache, arthritis, bruises, strains, and sprains. It is based on a blend of herbal ingredients traditionally used in Far Eastern medicine. The primary active ingredients are camphor and menthol; some formulations also include methyl salicylate or capsicum extract. These components act as counterirritants—camphor increases local blood flow and provides both cooling and warming sensations; menthol causes an initial cooling effect followed by warmth; methyl salicylate acts as an analgesic by numbing the skin; capsicum blocks pain transmission at nerve endings. Other essential oils such as cajuput oil, clove oil, cassia oil (cinnamon), eucalyptus oil (in some variants), dementholized mint oil, and paraffin/petroleum jelly serve as inactive or aromatic components that contribute to the balm’s distinctive scent[1][2][3][4][5][6]. The mechanism of action relies on stimulating sensory nerves in the skin to distract from deeper musculoskeletal pain.
