Overview

Tiger snake antivenom is an equine-derived purified immunoglobulin (IgG) preparation used in Australia for the treatment of systemic envenoming from tiger snakes (*Notechis* spp.) and related elapids, such as the red-bellied black snake (*Pseudechis porphyriacus*), copperheads (*Austrelaps* spp.), and rough-scaled snakes (*Tropidechis carinatus*). Developed and manufactured by CSL Seqirus, the antivenom consists of polyclonal antibodies or antibody fragments that bind to and neutralize the neurotoxic, myotoxic, and procoagulant toxins present in the snake venom. It is typically administered intravenously as a single vial (3,000 units) as soon as clinical or laboratory evidence of systemic envenoming is present. The Clinical Toxicology Research Group at the University of Newcastle has evaluated the drug in clinical trials, including a placebo-controlled randomized trial for red-bellied black snake envenoming to prevent myotoxicity, and the stopped-early ESAA (Early Snake Antivenom Administration) trial assessing immediate empiric administration of tiger snake and brown snake antivenoms upon hospital presentation.
