Overview

Tigerinin-1R is a synthetic host-defense peptide analog, originally derived from the skin secretions of the crab-eating frog (*Fejervarya cancrivora*), that is being investigated for its potential therapeutic role in type 2 diabetes and the prevention of diabetic complications. It exhibits potent insulin-releasing and glucose-lowering properties. Research indicates that tigerinin-1R can protect pancreatic beta cells (such as BRIN-BD11) and microglial cells (such as BV2) from the deleterious effects of high glucose (glucotoxicity) and high lipid (lipotoxicity) environments. This cytoprotective effect is mediated through the enhancement of antioxidant capacity, including increased catalase activity and elevated levels of cellular thiols and glutathione. By preserving beta-cell function and viability, tigerinin-1R represents a potential candidate for mitigating the progression of diabetes and its associated chronic complications.
