Tigogenin is a steroidal sapogenin, a natural product structurally related to diosgenin and hecogenin, found in various plants such as *Agave* and *Yucca* species. Research has demonstrated that tigogenin possesses antiproliferative and proapoptotic properties, particularly in the context of inflammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It induces apoptosis in human RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) through a caspase-dependent mechanism that involves the activation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Interestingly, tigogenin-induced apoptosis is also associated with the upregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and increased production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). While it shows potential as a therapeutic agent for RA, it is currently primarily utilized as a research tool and as a precursor in the semi-synthesis of steroid hormones.
