Overview

Tilmanocept is a receptor-targeted radiopharmaceutical diagnostic imaging agent used for lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection. It is a synthetic macromolecule consisting of multiple units of mannose and diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA) covalently attached to a dextran backbone. The mannose moieties specifically bind with high affinity to the CD206 receptor (mannose receptor) expressed on the surface of macrophages and dendritic cells residing in lymph nodes. When radiolabeled with technetium-99m (Tc 99m), tilmanocept enables the scintigraphic visualization and intraoperative detection of lymph nodes draining a primary tumor. Developed by Navidea Biopharmaceuticals, it is indicated for use in patients with breast cancer, melanoma, or squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity to guide sentinel node biopsy and has been investigated for imaging inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
