Overview

Timolol is a non-selective beta adrenergic blocker (beta blocker) used to treat several cardiovascular and ophthalmic conditions. Orally, it is prescribed for hypertension (high blood pressure), prevention of migraine headaches, and to improve survival after a heart attack by relaxing blood vessels and slowing the heart rate[1][5][7]. As an ophthalmic solution (eye drops), timolol is used to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension[2][3][4]. Its mechanism of action involves blocking both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors, reducing aqueous humor production in the eye and decreasing cardiac output systemically. Timolol was first approved by the FDA in 1978, is available as a generic medication, and appears on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[4][7].
