Overview

Timonacic, also known as thioproline, is a thiazolidine derivative that serves as a hepatoprotective agent and a metabolic scavenger of formaldehyde. Chemically, it is the condensation product of L-cysteine and formaldehyde (1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid). It is primarily utilized in the treatment of various liver conditions, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), chronic hepatitis, and toxic liver injury, where it acts as a donor of sulfhydryl groups to support detoxification and protect hepatocytes from oxidative damage. Beyond its established role in hepatology, timonacic has been investigated for its ability to modulate the inflammatory microenvironment and enhance the translational efficiency of mRNA when incorporated into lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems for applications such as skin rejuvenation and the de novo synthesis of elastin.
