Overview

Tin protoporphyrin IX is a synthetic metalloporphyrin and a potent competitive inhibitor of heme oxygenase, particularly heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1). By inhibiting this enzyme, it blocks the degradation of heme to biliverdin and subsequently to bilirubin. This mechanism has been investigated for the prevention of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates. Tin protoporphyrin IX has also shown activity in inhibiting HIV infection by binding to viral envelope proteins. It is primarily used as an investigational tool in research settings for studying heme metabolism, oxidative stress pathways, circadian rhythm biology, and photosensitization processes[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
