Sn-117m-DTPA (tin Sn 117m pentetate) is a bone-seeking radiopharmaceutical developed for the treatment of metastatic bone disease and the palliation of cancer-related bone pain. It consists of the radioisotope tin-117m (Sn-117m) chelated with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). Unlike traditional bone-targeted radiopharmaceuticals that emit beta particles, Sn-117m decays primarily by emitting conversion electrons with a very short path length (approximately 0.3 mm). This allows for the delivery of high-intensity, localized radiation to osteoblastic metastatic lesions on the bone surface while significantly reducing the radiation dose to the hematologic bone marrow, thereby minimizing myelosuppression. The drug is currently being evaluated in high-specific-activity (HSA) formulations for its potential to slow tumor progression and shrink bone metastases in patients with advanced prostate, breast, and non-small cell lung cancers.
