tinidazole

Tinidazole is a synthetic antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent belonging to the nitroimidazole class. It is used primarily to treat protozoan infections such as trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), giardiasis (intestinal infection), and amebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal). It is also indicated for bacterial vaginosis in adult women. The drug acts as a prodrug; its nitro group is reduced by microbial electron transport proteins (such as ferredoxin) within susceptible organisms. This reduction generates free nitro radicals that bind covalently to DNA and other macromolecules in the pathogen—causing DNA damage and cell death. Tinidazole was developed in 1972 and remains widely used globally for anaerobic amoebic and bacterial infections[1][2][3][4][5].
