Overview

Tinlarebant is a novel, orally administered small molecule developed to slow the progression of retinal diseases by reducing the accumulation of vitamin A-based toxins (bisretinoids) in the eye. These toxins are by-products of the visual cycle and contribute to conditions such as Stargardt Disease (STGD1) and Geographic Atrophy (GA), an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD). Tinlarebant acts as an antagonist of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), which is responsible for transporting retinol from the liver to the eye. By lowering serum RBP4 levels, tinlarebant reduces retinol delivery to retinal tissues, thereby decreasing bisretinoid formation and potentially preserving retinal integrity and vision. The drug is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for both STGD1 and GA[1][3][5][7].
